Mina Yu
Biography
The lyric soprano Mina Yu was born in Seoul, South Korea. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Classical Singing at the renowned Ewha Womans University. Even during her studies, she performed in numerous concerts, including various Young Artist Concerts, French, German, and English song recitals, and boutique concerts.
She won first place in the Ewha Vocal Competition in Seoul and was invited to sing at the Opera Gala Concert. After successfully completing her bachelor’s degree, she decided to move to Germany, the center of classical music, to continue her studies.
In 2020, Mina Yu began studying at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre under Prof. Carolyn Grace James. After relocating to Germany, she participated in numerous masterclasses, learning from distinguished artists such as Edita Gruberová, Brigitte Fassbaender, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Angela Denoke, and Alfred Brendel, steadily working towards her dream of an operatic career.
Furthermore, Mina Yu is a scholarship recipient of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Foundation. She also gained recognition in competitions, earning awards at the Mozart Prize of the Absalom Foundation, the Elise Meyer Competition in Hamburg, and the Hamel Competition in Hanover.
As part of the “11th German Lied Academy 2021”, Mina Yu performed in the final concert in Trossingen. This was followed by appearances in numerous song recitals, opera gala concerts, and benefit concerts in Germany, Italy, Austria, Latvia, and South Korea.
During her Opera Master’s studies, Mina Yu successfully performed medium to major roles in opera productions. In 2021, she appeared in the productions of Das Rheingold and Rinaldo as part of her opera master’s studies at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre. In June 2022, she sang the role of Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro. In October 2022, she began her Konzertexamen (Concert Exam) studies at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre and performed as Adele in Die Fledermaus in summer 2023. After graduating, she joined the Opera Studio at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich in September 2023.
During the 2023/24 season, she performed as Clorinda in La Cenerentola, Taumännchen in Hänsel und Gretel, and Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, while also preparing as a cover for the roles of Pamina, Musetta, and Anna Reich.
In the current season (2024/25), she performs as: Frasquita in Carmen, Tau-/Sandmännchen in Hänsel und Gretel, Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, Oberto in Alcina, Sophie in Werther, Anna Reich in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore, and Laurette in Le docteur Miracle.
Additionally, in February of this year, she performed Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem in Amberg with the ARD Choir, under the baton of Peter Dijkstra.
